Viva! Mayan Culture Festival

MEET PEDRO TEC

“I am feeling that the Maya are opening their wings to fly around the world, I have been an instrument of God, to be able to reflect the world of my ancestors. With this work, we dignify and give meaning to our past, and remember that the Maya are a living people. We should be proud of our roots and our Maya culture.  Sometimes I believe that life or destiny has chosen me to tell the story of my people through art. all my inspiration and my learning of art has been in dreams and mystical things that are not in my control. With this work, I conceive a face and we dignify a people.”- Pedro Tec

The ÓperaMaya, “Viva! Mayan Culture Festival” guest artist, Pedro Tec has created the exhibition “Mayan Dignity” in celebration of the 2019 ÓperaMaya season, “Dignificada.”

Mayan Dignity” is a series of sensitive images of the Mayan people throughout their history. For a time in his life, the artist Pedro Tec was guided by mystical experiences in dreams, seeking to awaken from their reality and headed for life therapy with the Mayan world, giving life to the blood of their ancestors.

In a revealing dream-a misty landscape appeared with a corpse of a woman, with a moon-like glow she guided him to the dark side of a mountain, walking through fog she told him, “You do not thank from where your God has taken you.”  Thus, he began his journey. He sought out the place of this dream encounter and began to walk in those enchanted forests looking for characters who wanted to tell their story.

His work was chasing the water of life, without noticing where it was, he seemed to be lost looking for a link, which was art. The Maya are a living, sensitive people who have preserved their culture and their traditions throughout the centuries.

There are over 20 images, all in black and white, with dramatic faces and landscapes of the Mayab that tell religious, social, political and daily life stories. Dignity is reflected in a tribute to a people whom have been punished by history and forgotten by the present.
